The British Geological Survey (BGS) is the UK’s premier centre for geological information. We provide expert services and impartial advice in all areas of geoscience. Our research in strategically important areas includes energy and natural resources, vulnerability to environmental change and hazards, and Earth system science.
Our climate change research is driven by high-level scientific questions and practical issues that both UK national and international efforts have identified. The geological record is uniquely positioned to resolve issues that are needed to make progress in climate-change science.
We maintain and develop our understanding of geosciences to improve policy-making, enhance national wealth and reduce risk.

The Walker Institute for Climate System Research is a leading UK research centre based at the University of Reading. The Institute aims to improve understanding of our future climate and its impacts for the benefit of society. We work with business, governments and research organisations across the world to provide advice on the risks and opportunities from climate change over the coming seasons and decades.
The Institute integrates a range of disciplines crucial for understanding our changing climate and its impacts, including climate and weather processes and modelling, water resources and quality, biodiversity, agriculture, soils and the urban environment. We are UK leaders in the development of new climate models which will give us more detailed information about regional climate change and the risks from extreme events, like storms and flooding. As well as innovative research, training in climate change and its impacts is also a priority – for students, researchers and businesses alike.
